“UK Residents Warned of Potential Floods”

Must read

Residents in the UK are being cautioned to prepare for intense rainfall that may lead to potential flooding.

The UK’s Met Office has advised individuals in eight specific areas to assemble an “emergency kit” to cope with possible floods, power outages, and travel disruptions on Thursday morning. Weather alerts, including a rain warning, are in effect for Thursday, with southern England expected to bear the brunt of heavy rain and strong winds.

The Met Office website states that there is a likelihood of flooding in some residences and commercial premises, along with spray and flooding on roadways, leading to hazardous driving conditions and an increased risk of accidents, causing longer journey times.

The recommended “emergency kit” should include essential items like insurance documents, contact numbers, a flashlight with spare batteries, a first aid kit containing any necessary medications, and supplies for pets and infants.

Even though the Environment Agency hasn’t issued any flood warnings or alerts, the Met Office advises those in the mentioned regions to gather essential items before the expected rain hits on Thursday morning. The regions under the weather warning for rain are;

The rain warning encompasses London, the Southeast of England, the Southwest of England, and the East of England, with partial coverage extending to areas like the West Midlands.

The Met Office further advises individuals to assess the risk of flooding to their properties, create a flood plan, and prepare an emergency flood kit to minimize delays. They recommend checking road conditions, public transportation schedules, and adjusting travel plans accordingly.

A significant amount of rain, up to 50mm, is expected to fall rapidly as a low-pressure system traverses the UK eastward. Forecasters anticipate severe impacts in areas like Surrey, West Sussex, and East Sussex, with hilly regions in North Devon and Cornwall also likely to experience heavy rainfall.

Although more than 16mm of rain was recorded in the Scottish Highlands on Tuesday, today is anticipated to be relatively dry for most regions until the arrival of the low-pressure system later tonight. The weather warning suggests a high probability of widespread heavy rain moving into southwestern Britain by Wednesday evening, spreading northeastward by early Thursday morning with expected rainfall ranging from 20-30mm to 30-50mm in some areas.

Yesterday, the Mirror reported a separate weather alert for strong winds, indicating gusts of 65-75 mph could impact the North Sea coast on Thursday afternoon, particularly affecting Lincolnshire and Norfolk.
