“Woman fakes cancer for cash, deceives partner”

Must read

A woman with two children allegedly pretended to have cancer to deceive her partner into giving her money. Laura McPherson, 35, reportedly fabricated a story about having multiple types of cancer, including cervical, ovarian, colon, bowel, and breast cancer. She convinced her partner, Jon Leonard, to provide nearly £25,000 for what he believed were life-saving treatments over a five-year period.

Despite claiming to need the money for cancer treatments, McPherson apparently used the funds for personal enhancements like breast surgery and weight-loss treatments while traveling abroad. A court hearing revealed her deceitful actions, leading to an order for her to repay £30,714 by a specified date.

Jon Leonard expressed relief that the ordeal was over after enduring years of deception. He disclosed that McPherson’s lies extended back to her school days and described her as a manipulative individual. The court learned that McPherson had received money from Leonard between March 2017 and January 2022 under false pretenses of needing cancer treatment.

Prosecutors detailed how McPherson misled Leonard about her cancer diagnosis, claiming to undergo various treatments and seeking funds for overseas medical care. Police initiated an investigation after Leonard discovered inconsistencies in her stories. McPherson eventually admitted to fraud after initially denying the charges and accusing Leonard of being controlling.

In a victim impact statement, Leonard expressed feeling that McPherson had stolen years of his life and shattered his trust in humanity. He revealed the emotional toll her deception had taken on him and the profound sense of betrayal he experienced. McPherson’s defense acknowledged her actions spanning several years and attributed her behavior to anxiety and depression.

Despite McPherson’s lack of prior convictions, the judge labeled her as a deceitful individual and sentenced her to a two-year community order. The court emphasized the severity of her actions and the impact they had on Leonard’s life.
