Backpacking Tragedy: Woman Dies from Methanol Shots

Must read

Tragedy struck as a woman passed away after inadvertently consuming methanol-contaminated shots.

Last year, during a backpacking trip in Southeast Asia, 28-year-old Bethany Clarke and her companion, Simone White, 28, embarked on an adventure that ended in sorrow.

The fatal incident occurred after both women imbibed illicit alcohol, leading to the tragic demise of Simone.

Their journey commenced in Cambodia and proceeded to Laos, where they indulged in river tubing, a popular tourist attraction, followed by a night of drinking in their hostel.

Bethany recalled, “We consumed shots contaminated with methanol, having five or six each, mixed with Sprite.”

The next day, feeling unwell, they attributed it to a hangover but sensed something was amiss, a sensation unlike any previous hangover.

Despite their discomfort, they proceeded with their plans, including a visit to the Blue Lagoon and kayaking down the river, all while exhibiting early signs of methanol poisoning, such as weakness and nausea.

Their condition deteriorated on a bus journey to the next destination, with Bethany fainting and Simone experiencing continuous vomiting.

After being transferred to a local hospital, where the diagnosis remained elusive, they were eventually taken to a private facility, but unfortunately, it was too late for Simone.

Bethany described the harrowing experience, mentioning Simone’s seizures during dialysis and the desperate attempts to save her life that ultimately proved futile.

Following the devastating loss, Bethany has been actively advocating for awareness and change, emphasizing the need for education on methanol poisoning signs, particularly in the UK.

The concerning trend of methanol poisoning prompted the Foreign Office to expand its list of high-risk countries, including Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, and Russia, among others.

This lethal poisoning, resulting from the adulteration of alcoholic beverages with methanol, manifests through symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion, with potential vision impairments emerging within 12 to 48 hours post-consumption.
