“Health Influencer Reveals Apple Sticker Code Secrets”

Must read

As fall arrives, many will include apples in their baking, a seasonal tradition. When buying apples, it’s common to notice the individual stickers on each fruit. These stickers contain a secret number code known as the Price Look-Up (PLU) code. This code reveals details about the apple’s variety, size, and cultivation method, whether organic, conventional, or genetically modified. It assists cashiers in pricing accurately and informs consumers about the product at the point of purchase.

Recently, health influencer Zib Atkins advised people to pay attention to the numbers on the stickers affixed to apples. Through a TikTok video, Zib showcased various apples with different number codes and cautioned against certain variations. Zib emphasized avoiding apples with stickers starting with the numbers three or four and instead opting for those starting with nine.

According to Zib, apples in supermarkets are often coated in wax, with non-organic apples typically marked with codes starting with three or four. This indicates the presence of synthetic wax that may contain harmful pesticides. Zib highlighted the potential risks associated with consuming such apples and recommended choosing organic options for safety.

While the wax on apples is deemed safe for consumption and is applied post-washing to enhance appearance and prolong freshness, consumers can remove it if desired. Zib suggested a simple method of soaking apples in water mixed with baking soda to eliminate surface pesticides, reducing potential exposure significantly.

For those concerned about artificial waxes and pesticides, opting for organic apples is a safer choice. Additionally, washing apples thoroughly at home can help minimize risks associated with consuming treated produce.
