“Shock Pregnancy: Woman Discovers Ectopic Pregnancy with Copper Coil”

Must read

A 28-year-old woman, Milja Maunuvaara, was surprised to discover she was pregnant despite having a copper coil inserted as a form of contraception. The pregnancy turned out to be ectopic, a condition where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, typically due to low hormone levels. Despite having the intrauterine device (IUD) for 18 months and trusting it completely, Milja experienced intense stomach pains in September, leading her to seek medical advice. After visiting her GP in Helsinki, Finland, an ultrasound confirmed her pregnancy.

Having used contraceptive pills for a decade before switching to the copper coil, Milja expressed her shock at the unexpected pregnancy, stating her full trust in the contraceptive method. However, she found relief in the ectopic nature of the pregnancy as she wasn’t ready for motherhood at the time. Given the diagnosis, Milja had the option of waiting, taking medication, or undergoing surgery to address the ectopic pregnancy. Opting for medication, she received an injection in her thigh, which successfully resolved the situation within a day.

Following this experience, Milja decided to use condoms with her partner to avoid chemical contraceptive methods. Despite her personal choice, the NHS emphasizes the high effectiveness of the copper coil when used correctly, being more than 99% reliable in preventing pregnancy. The NHS also highlights the effectiveness of other contraceptive methods, such as pills, while noting that condoms, although essential for preventing STIs, have a lower efficacy rate in preventing pregnancy.

Women can have the copper coil inserted for free at sexual health clinics or select GP surgeries, where healthcare providers will discuss their medical history during the initial consultation, as detailed on the NHS website.
