Paula Hudgell, a determined fighter, has not only provided a loving home for her adopted son Tony, who suffered severe abuse resulting in the amputation of his legs but has also successfully advocated for changes in the law. Her efforts led to the implementation of Tony’s Law, which imposes stricter penalties for child abuse, including a life sentence for those responsible for a child’s death under their care.
Acknowledged for her commitment to preventing child abuse, Paula was awarded an OBE in 2022, while Tony, at the age of nine, received the British Empire Medal for his contributions to the cause. Tony, an extraordinary young boy, additionally received the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain award and shares a special bond with the Princess of Wales, whom he considers his closest companion.
In response to the challenges faced by children affected by abuse, Paula and her family established the Tony Hudgell Foundation. However, Paula, aged 58, now confronts a battle against terminal cancer after enduring numerous misdiagnoses over four years before being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer that had spread to her lungs and peritoneal.
In a recent interview, Paula expressed concern for her family’s well-being, particularly her son Tony, who has shown worry about her health. Despite her own health struggles, she remains focused on raising awareness about cancer and the importance of timely medical care.
Paula’s journey with cancer began when she was initially diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2022 after numerous visits to doctors who misdiagnosed her condition. Despite undergoing successful treatment, her cancer resurfaced, prompting her to undergo additional surgeries and treatments.
As Paula faces the uncertainties of her health, she remains resolute in her mission to advocate for stricter measures against child cruelty in the UK. She is determined to continue fighting for justice and raising awareness about the impact of child abuse.
Despite the challenges ahead, Paula remains determined to make a difference and cherish the time she has with her loved ones. Her unwavering strength and resilience serve as an inspiration to all those around her, including her beloved son Tony.
