Teen Paralyzed, Dies After Swallowing Slug Dare

Must read

A tragic incident occurred when a teenager became paralyzed and faced a devastating fate after ingesting a slug during a dare at a birthday gathering. The young rugby enthusiast, Sam Ballard, hailing from Sydney, Australia, was socializing at a friend’s residence when he was encouraged by his peers to consume the slug found on the patio. Little did he know, the slug harbored the lethal rat lungworm disease.

This parasite, usually present in rodents, transmits its larvae through the animals’ excrement, which can then infect snails and slugs. While Sam did not fall ill immediately, he started experiencing severe leg pains in the days following the party in 2010. Concerned about the slug consumption, Sam sought reassurance from his mother, who dismissed his worries by claiming that no one gets sick from such an act. Subsequently, Sam developed a brain infection, plunging into a coma for 420 days upon which he awoke paralyzed from the neck down, enduring seizures, struggles with body temperature regulation, and requiring tube feeding. Tragically, he succumbed to the illness at the age of 28 in 2018, with his family and close friends by his side.

Recalling the ill-fated night of the party, Sam’s friend Jimmy recounted, “We were sitting, having a bit of a red wine appreciation night, trying to act as grown-ups and a slug came crawling across. The conversation came up, ‘Should I eat it?’ Off Sam went. Bang. That’s how it happened.” Another friend, Michael Sheasby, shared his shock upon seeing Sam at the hospital post-party, describing the scene as grim with Sam appearing emaciated and connected to numerous cables.

Despite the immense impact on her family, Sam’s mother, Katie, refrained from blaming his friends for the dare, attributing their actions to camaraderie. Following Sam’s discharge from the hospital, Katie mentioned on Facebook that her son remained his cheeky self and maintained his sense of humor, though acknowledging the profound and lasting effects of the incident on both their lives.

Throughout Sam’s remaining years, Katie tirelessly advocated for his care, navigating challenges with the Australian government’s disability insurance scheme. Initially granted £234,000 in support, the funding was later reduced by more than half in 2017. However, through persistent efforts from Sam’s loved ones, the decision was eventually overturned, ensuring he received the necessary assistance.
