“20-Year-Old Accused of Fatally Assaulting Mother with Hammer”

Must read

A 20-year-old individual, reportedly troubled, is accused of fatally assaulting his mother with a hammer and then fleeing into nearby woods, where he uttered a single distressing word.

Sebastian Van Stockum, the 20-year-old in question, was taken into custody last week after allegedly confessing to the killing of Laura Williams, aged 55, close to their affluent residence. Authorities were alerted to the incident after a witness reported hearing a male voice shouting ‘Mama’ from the wooded area.

As law enforcement officers responded to the scene, a man dialed 911 and informed operators that he had “murdered his mother,” referring to Laura, who had raised Van Stockum as a single parent. Upon arrival, officers found Van Stockum at the door, his face, attire, and hands drenched in blood, leading to his immediate arrest.

Laura sustained severe head injuries, including a fractured skull and blunt-force trauma to the left side of her head. A bloodied hammer was discovered near her head in the grass. Despite resuscitation efforts, she could not be saved and was pronounced deceased at the location due to the extent of her injuries.

During questioning, Van Stockum purportedly admitted to his involvement in the crime when asked by officers, stating, “I did it” and acknowledging that he had used a knife, a hammer, and his fists. He also mentioned struggling with mental health issues.

Laura, a single mother and antique dealer, resided with her son in their $1.9 million New Canaan, Connecticut home before the tragic incident. Van Stockum’s mugshot displayed him with bloodstains and scratches on his face. He appeared in court at Stamford Superior Court, where State Attorney Paul Ferencek described the murder as “particularly violent,” noting the severe trauma to the victim’s skull.

Defense attorney Philip Russell, representing Van Stockum at his bond hearing, expressed shock at the situation, emphasizing the unforeseeable nature of the events and urging against premature judgment, given the complexity of the case and the tragic circumstances.

This incident follows the chilling confession of another individual who admitted to killing his parents and burying their bodies in their backyard during a televised interview. Lorenz Kraus, aged 53, calmly disclosed the details of the crime, which unfolded after the discovery of his missing parents, Franz and Theresia Kraus, who vanished in 2017.

Kraus recounted to CBS6 the events leading up to the burial of his parents in the backyard of their Albany residence, admitting to suffocating them. Law enforcement initially investigated Kraus for financial offenses, and a subsequent welfare check on his parents, who were still receiving benefits, led to the grim discovery.

Following the recovery of the bodies, Kraus approached various media outlets, ultimately confessing on camera to the heinous acts he committed.
