An appalling case unfolded in court as it was revealed that a heartless couple, the parents of a nine-day-old infant, callously laughed while presenting her lifeless body at the hospital. Hilary Johnson II, 24, received a 19-year prison sentence, and Z’ibreyea S. Parker, 22, was sentenced to 10 years after admitting to charges linked to the death of their newborn daughter, I’ijayah Johnson.
The chilling incident occurred on May 4, 2024, when Johnson and Parker brought Iijayah, who was unresponsive and cold, to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, claiming she had fallen from a stroller two days earlier. However, medical staff quickly realized that the infant’s severe injuries did not align with the parents’ story. Prosecutors noted the parents’ disturbing behavior at the hospital, where they struggled to provide basic information about their daughter and were seen laughing during the check-in process.
Reports from local news sources detailed how Parker downplayed the seriousness of Iijayah’s injuries, suggesting they were not significant. Hospital staff discovered multiple signs of abuse on the infant’s body, including severe burns on her feet and other areas, cuts on her head and face, and bruises on her back.
Following a thorough investigation, Norfolk Police confirmed that Iijayah’s death resulted from blunt trauma to her head and torso, along with deep partial-thickness burns on her feet caused by hot liquid. The autopsy also revealed broken ribs and various internal and external injuries, underscoring the brutality inflicted on the defenseless infant.
In a plea deal, Johnson admitted to second-degree murder, while Parker pleaded guilty to child abuse with serious injury. The prosecutor dropped Parker’s murder charge and Johnson’s child abuse count as part of the agreement.
After sentencing, Attorney Ramin Fatehi expressed the vulnerability of newborn victims like Iijayah, emphasizing the need for justice and protection. He acknowledged the challenges of the case and highlighted the importance of securing convictions to honor innocent victims.
The tragic case raised concerns from Iijayah’s grandfather, Hilary Johnson Sr., who had previously warned hospital staff about his son and daughter-in-law’s capability to care for the infant. Despite having mental health issues and living in a tent under a highway at the time of Iijayah’s birth, the parents declined assistance offered to them upon the baby’s discharge from the hospital.
Reflecting on the devastating turn of events, Johnson Sr. lamented the unexpected behavior of his son and daughter-in-law, expressing hope that they would prioritize the well-being of their child. The heart-wrenching story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and protection for the most vulnerable members of society.
