“John Lewis to Boost Pay for 65,000 Employees by 7%”

Must read

Around 65,000 employees at the renowned retailer John Lewis are set to receive a significant pay increase in April. The John Lewis Partnership, which includes both department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, announced that shop floor wages will go up by almost 7%, equivalent to an annual raise of £1,600 for full-time workers. Notably, staff at John Lewis are referred to as partners due to the company’s unique employee ownership structure.

While the pay rise news is promising, there is uncertainty about the potential partner bonus for this year, as none has been granted since 2022. Jason Tarry, the chair of the partnership, expressed the company’s commitment to awarding a bonus at the earliest opportunity. The decision regarding the bonus will be made by the Board in March, separate from the recent pay increase announcement.

John Lewis revealed that 99.6% of its partners will benefit from this pay raise, totaling £108 million. Effective April 1, employees on the shop floor at both John Lewis and Waitrose will see a 6.9% salary boost, with minimum hourly rates climbing to £13.25 nationwide and reaching £14.80 for stores within the M25 area.

Additionally, employees who acquire specialized skills and take on particular roles will see their pay rates increase to £14.31 per hour, rising to £15.98 within the M25. These adjustments partially align with the higher National Living Wage, which will rise by 4.1% to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and above starting in April.

Helen Webb, the chief people officer for the John Lewis Partnership, emphasized the importance of their employees by stating, “Our Partners are the heartbeat of our business. This £108m investment is about putting more money into their pockets month-in, month-out.” She further highlighted the company’s ongoing dedication to partner pay, maintaining consistency with previous years.

Apart from the pay increase, employees at the Partnership enjoy various benefits, including discounts at John Lewis and Waitrose, up to a 12% pension contribution, discounted rates at affiliated hotels, financial support for personal development and leisure activities, subsidized meals, and comprehensive health and wellbeing services, such as access to physiotherapy and counseling options.

The John Lewis Partnership reported a significant increase in losses for the six months leading up to the end of July, attributing the rise to restructuring costs and new tax and regulatory charges. The group operates 36 department stores and over 300 Waitrose supermarkets, striving to navigate financial challenges and revitalize its operations.
