“Co-op Introduces ‘Flexi Checkouts’ to Slash Queues”

Must read

Co-op is set to introduce innovative “flexi checkouts” in its stores to reduce queue times. These smart tills can switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preference, aiming to enhance convenience and efficiency for shoppers. Supplied by American company Diebold Nixdorf, these checkouts will be deployed across 150 Co-op stores by April.

In addition to offering flexibility for customers to choose their preferred checkout method, the screens on these tills will display price discounts, promotions, and potentially facilitate parcel collections in the future. Co-op claims to be the first supermarket in the UK to adopt this technology.

David Tyas, Co-op’s head of operations, support centre, and innovation, emphasized the company’s dedication to creating local stores that cater to community needs. He highlighted the importance of providing both personalized customer service with staff interaction and quick transactions for those seeking efficiency.

With plans to open 18 new or renovated stores in the first quarter of 2026, Co-op inaugurated its first store of the year in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire. The company also revealed store refurbishments, including locations in Coventry and London.

Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, emphasized the brand’s commitment to offering quality products, value, and a range of promotions to meet customer demands. She expressed delight in the opening of the new store in Oxfordshire and reiterated Co-op’s strategy to expand its presence in communities across the UK.

Furthermore, Co-op announced its initiative to create thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years. Setting aside £70 million through its Levy Share service, the retailer aims to establish 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030, supporting skill development and employment opportunities.
