“UCL Agrees to £21M Payout for Disrupted Education”

Must read

Thousands of former students are in line to receive a portion of £21 million following a legal dispute regarding disruptions to their education during the COVID-19 lockdowns. University College London (UCL) has agreed to disburse this significant sum to approximately 6,500 individuals, although the university has not accepted any liability. The actual amount each student will receive remains undecided, with the students contending that they did not receive the complete educational experience they had paid for due to the closures of campuses and the transition to online learning as a result of the pandemic.

According to the Financial Times, the payout per person will vary, setting a potential precedent for other universities to compensate their students. The Student Group Claim, representing around 194,000 claimants from 36 different universities, is pushing for similar compensations.

UCL recently announced a confidential settlement, stating that the agreement was reached without any admission of liability. The university emphasized the importance of resolving the matter amicably to avoid additional costs that could divert resources away from teaching and supporting students. Adam Zoubir, a partner at Harcus Parker solicitors, expressed satisfaction with the settlement and stated that while the UCL case has been resolved, they continue to represent numerous students from other universities affected by the pandemic.

Similarly, Shimon Goldwater, a partner at Asserson solicitors, commented on the successful resolution with UCL and highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Student Group Claim to assist students from various universities. Universities UK acknowledged the challenges faced by institutions and students during the pandemic, recognizing the adaptability and creativity displayed by universities to ensure students could complete their degrees despite the restrictions on in-person teaching.

In light of these developments, the focus remains on supporting students and delivering quality education amidst the evolving circumstances.
