Government Plans Comprehensive Update to MOT Testing Process

Must read

The government has issued an update regarding proposed changes to the MOT testing process. Baroness Caroline Pidgeon of the Liberal Democrats posed a written question in Parliament inquiring about plans to reassess the MOT system. She sought details on upcoming modifications to ensure alignment with modern vehicle technological advancements and requested information on the timeframe for such a review. Lord Peter Hendy responded on behalf of the government, emphasizing the critical role of MOT tests in maintaining road safety by verifying that drivers uphold a basic standard of vehicle maintenance. He stated that the government constantly reviews the MOT content to accommodate new technologies and enhance the service.

In 2023, a call for evidence was issued to gather perspectives on the future of the MOT, focusing on aspects such as electric vehicles, emission testing, and advanced driver assistance systems. Ongoing efforts include the collection of additional evidence in these areas. Paul Barker, editor at Auto Express, highlighted the government’s intentions to update the MOT to accommodate new vehicle technologies, particularly for electric vehicles and cars with advanced driver-assistance systems.

Barker emphasized the need for modernization in several key areas, including expanding coverage to encompass features like automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist, integrating digital improvements for better data management, and ensuring consistent application of standards across all garages nationwide. He pointed out that the current MOT format falls short in evaluating crucial elements present in modern vehicles, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and the health of EV batteries and high-voltage systems. Barker stressed the importance of aligning the MOT test with evolving automotive technologies to maintain its relevance as a safety measure.
