Shocking surveillance footage revealed a rapist stalking a nightclub in Scotland, targeting victims shortly before drugging and sexually assaulting two women. Kenan Baki, aged 46, received a nine-year prison sentence for raping one woman and sexually assaulting another after spiking their drinks at Society nightclub in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on September 2, 2023. Prosecutors at the High Court in Edinburgh presented video evidence showing the perpetrator moving around the club, seemingly scanning tables for unattended drinks while searching for vulnerable women.
Additional CCTV footage shown to the jury captured a woman collapsing in a chair at Baki’s nearby barber shop after he took her there when she became unwell from the drugs. She was observed conversing with him as he touched her hair and used a hairdryer on her face, pretending to style her hair. The victim then seemed to lose consciousness, her head falling back in the chair. Baki proceeded to carry the unconscious woman to the back of the shop, where he committed the rape, as reported by the Daily Record.
The court was informed that earlier that same evening, Baki had drugged and sexually assaulted another woman by slipping an unknown substance into her drink. Jurors watched CCTV footage of the woman becoming unwell, struggling to move and remain conscious before collapsing. Concerned members of the public later intervened and removed the victim from Baki’s presence.
Baki was handed an extended sentence of 11 years, including nine years in prison, at the High Court in Kilmarnock on Tuesday for his convictions of rape and sexual assault. He was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, with a non-harassment order imposed for an indefinite period.
Fiona Kirkby, Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, expressed, “Kenan Baki represents a significant threat to women through his sexually deviant and predatory behavior. The prosecution’s evidence illustrated his targeting of these two women before deliberately drugging them to exploit their vulnerability.”
She continued, “His accountability for this abhorrent conduct should serve as a clear warning to those who aim to inflict sexual harm on others. I encourage anyone affected by similar offenses to consider reporting their experiences when they feel ready and able. Our trauma-informed staff will listen and support you as we strive for justice through all available means.”
Between 2023 and 2024, 168 cases of drink spiking were reported to the police in Scotland. However, only nine of those cases were forwarded to the Crown Office, with the rest considered lacking in evidence.
In Scotland, spiking incidents are not categorized as a distinct criminal offense but are treated as drugging cases, where substances are administered without the victim’s knowledge, or prosecuted under the Sexual Offences Act.
