“Mother of Slain Teen Pushes for School Bleed Kits”

Must read

The mother of Harvey Willgoose has expressed her willingness to confront her son’s murderer, Mohammed Umar Khan, despite his intimidating behavior during the trial. In a plea for ‘bleed control’ kits to be available in all secondary schools, she believes such a kit could have saved her son’s life. Harvey, aged 15, was tragically killed by Khan during a lunch break at All Saints High School in Sheffield. Khan, also 15, was recently sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 years for the murder and for carrying a hunting knife into the school.

Caroline Willgoose, though deeply affected by the loss of her son, has stated that she is open to meeting Khan, albeit with concerns about his potential lack of remorse. She contemplates participating in restorative justice to address the impact of the crime. Harvey’s grandmother has reached out to Khan’s family post-sentencing to express gratitude for their efforts to seek help.

Caroline advocates for the implementation of bleed kits and knife arches in schools, emphasizing their potential to prevent fatalities in emergency situations. She has collaborated with organizations to push for these kits in every secondary school in her city. Stressing the urgency, she highlights the critical time frame in which a person can succumb to severe bleeding and the importance of swift response.

In addition to her advocacy work, Caroline engages with school children to educate them on the dangers of knives. She shares how Harvey’s friends still gather at a bench outside their home, unwilling to let his memory fade away. Through her initiatives and partnerships, she strives to create a safer environment and raise awareness about the devastating impacts of violence in schools.
