“Legal Battle Over 2008 F1 Title Dismissed as ‘Overly Ambitious'”

Must read

Felipe Massa’s £64 million legal battle over the 2008 Formula One championship has been dismissed as “overly ambitious” by lawyers representing Formula One Management and the FIA. The former Ferrari driver is suing F1, the FIA, and ex-chief Bernie Ecclestone, alleging breach of contract or duty.

In 2023, Massa learned of statements made by Ecclestone about the 2008 ‘Crashgate’ scandal, where Renault orchestrated a crash at the Singapore Grand Prix to benefit Fernando Alonso. Ecclestone hinted that he and then-FIA president Max Mosley were aware of the incident in 2008.

Massa, who narrowly missed out on the championship to Lewis Hamilton, claims Ecclestone’s remarks justify his title claim. He seeks acknowledgment of this and substantial financial compensation for lost earnings and sponsorships.

During a High Court session, the defendants’ lawyers argued for the case’s dismissal, labeling Massa’s assertions as an attempt to rewrite history. They argue that Massa’s claims overlook his own errors and that Hamilton outperformed him in the 2008 season.

Despite these arguments, Massa’s legal counsel maintains that his claims have merit and that he has a genuine chance of success. The court hearing, overseen by Justice Jay, is expected to conclude soon, with a verdict to follow.
