An elderly man, aged 86, passed away following an alleged assault during a robbery at his residence, which deeply impacted his local community. John Burke, who had been in poor health, resided in a ground floor flat with his wife when they were reportedly targeted by a serial burglar named Ashley Malcolm, aged 39. Malcolm is facing charges related to the murder of John Burke, occurring after a series of other burglaries in the vicinity.

The incidents unfolded in Hackney, north east London, where Malcolm is believed to have committed two break-ins before targeting John’s home on the morning of September 29. Following the assault on John, he was hospitalized but later discharged, only to tragically pass away the next day.

A resident, preferring anonymity, expressed sorrow over the loss of John, describing him as a respected and kind member of the neighborhood who had been struggling with declining health for some time. John, known to have a visiting son, was well-regarded by those around him for his amiable nature and sense of humor.

In response to the case, a murder investigation was launched, leading to Malcolm being charged with murder and scheduled to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court. Acting Det Chief Supt Brittany Clarke acknowledged the community’s concern and the loss of John, emphasizing the swift actions taken by the authorities in response to new information.

Malcolm is facing additional charges related to robbery and other criminal activities in Hackney during September. These include a burglary at Gransden Road, a burglary at Brooke Road, and an attempted break-in at Stamford Hill, all linked to the day of John’s tragic death.

The authorities reported that the incidents at Brooke Road and Stamford Hill were promptly reported to the police, highlighting the ongoing investigation into Malcolm’s alleged criminal activities. The community mourns the loss of John and continues to support the investigation efforts.
