A railway employee has been released from the hospital today after the assault on a train in Huntingdon. Samir Zitouni, aged 48 and working for LNER, sustained multiple injuries during the incident on November 1. He was in critical condition but has now been discharged from the hospital, with plans to continue his recovery at home, as confirmed by British Transport Police.
In a statement, the police mentioned, “Samir Zitouni had been in a critical condition with multiple injuries, and thanks to the efforts of NHS medical staff he’s been able to be discharged from hospital today to continue his recovery at home.”
Expressing gratitude for the public’s support, Samir’s family said, “We are so thankful for the overwhelming support from the public and touched by the kind words regarding Sam’s bravery during the attack. While we are delighted to have him back home, he still faces a significant recovery journey, and we kindly request privacy to care for him as a family.”
During the assault, Samir sustained severe injuries while protecting passengers. LNER acknowledged his heroic actions, citing his more than 20 years of service with the company and crediting him with saving multiple lives. Using a frying pan to confront the assailant, Samir was one of 11 individuals treated in the hospital post-incident.
There have been appeals for Samir to be honored for his bravery. Shadow Secretary of State Richard Holden MP wrote to Minister of State MP Darren Jones, advocating for recognition of Samir’s “acts of selfless and outstanding bravery.”
Anthony Williams, 32, appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on November 3, facing 10 charges of attempted murder related to the incident. He is scheduled to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on December 1.
