The UK Government is arranging flights to evacuate British citizens from Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
Authorities are organizing aircraft to assist British nationals as the death toll from the catastrophic natural event continues to climb. Five fatalities have been confirmed in Jamaica, and at least 20 individuals have perished in Haiti due to flooding triggered by the category five hurricane.
With wind speeds reaching 185mph, Hurricane Melissa stands as one of the most intense Atlantic hurricanes on record. The UK has pledged £2.5 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Jamaica. Keir Starmer expressed shock at the extent of the destruction witnessed in footage of the disaster. The Prime Minister informed members of parliament that HMS Trent and specialized rapid response teams had been positioned in the area to provide aid.
In the aftermath of the storm, many people are stranded without power and face infrastructure damage due to the floods. Although Hurricane Melissa has been downgraded to a category one storm, it is anticipated to bring additional strong winds and heavy rainfall.
In Jamaica, over 25,000 individuals sought refuge in shelters on Wednesday after their homes were ravaged by the storm. Dana Morris Dixon, Jamaica’s education minister, reported that 77% of the island was without electricity.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated, “Recovery will be a gradual process, but the government is fully mobilized. Relief materials are being readied, and every effort is being made to swiftly restore normalcy.”
Describing the devastation in the Black River community on the southwest coast, he remarked, “Black River is essentially ground zero where the residents are still grappling with the aftermath.”
The power outages have complicated damage assessments due to a complete communication blackout in certain areas, as highlighted by Richard Thompson, the acting director general of Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, in an interview with Nationwide News Network radio station.
