British sporting icon Jenson Button, a former Formula 1 champion, is bidding farewell to his illustrious racing career. Having retired from F1 in 2016, Button has continued competing, most recently in the World Endurance Championship. His final professional drive will take place at the upcoming eight-hour race in Bahrain.
While renowned for his expert analysis as a pundit on Sky Sports, Button is also remembered for his F1 achievements. He stands out as one of the few British drivers who have triumphed in F1 and one of even fewer who have outperformed and defeated Lewis Hamilton in fair competition.
Button made his mark in F1 during the early 2000s with the Renault team, which was on the verge of dominance. Despite missing the chance to be part of Renault’s success due to being replaced by Fernando Alonso, Button later found success with Honda, securing podium finishes and claiming his first F1 victory in 2006.
Following Honda’s sudden exit in 2008, Button’s future in F1 seemed uncertain until the team was acquired by Ross Brawn for a symbolic £1, leading to Button’s Cinderella story World Championship win with Brawn GP.
Button’s career at McLaren post-2010, where he competed against Hamilton, showcased his talent, with memorable performances in 2011 despite falling short of the championship. He notably outscored Hamilton in a season, a feat achieved by only a select few.
As Hamilton moved to Mercedes, Button remained loyal to McLaren until his departure from F1. Now, at 45, he has decided to retire from racing to prioritize spending time with his young family.
