An American mother has been charged with second-degree murder after her baby died from being left in a hot car. Nyla Simmons, 22, allegedly left her seven-month-old baby, Novanni Truvan Simmons, in a car outside a Georgia car dealership where she worked. The child was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. Simmons was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and cruelty to children, and is currently held without bond at Lee County Jail.
The incident occurred when Simmons left Novanni in the car at the start of her shift. She later found the child unresponsive and took the baby to the hospital. Temperatures in Albany reached 31C that day, but the duration the child spent unattended in the car remains unknown.
A post-mortem examination was conducted, with the official cause of death pending further investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is actively involved in the case, having identified Simmons as a suspect through interviews and evidence collection. In a separate case, a father, Christopher Scholtes, faced a similar tragedy when his two-year-old daughter, Parker, died after being left in a hot car. Scholtes pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse but was found dead in his home just before turning himself in as part of a plea deal.
