“CEBL Championship Reverts to Single-Game Format”

Must read

The Canadian Elite Basketball League has reverted to a single-game championship format after the abrupt cancellation of the best-of-three final due to unsafe playing conditions caused by court condensation. The decision came after just a few minutes of play between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers. The league emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of all involved in the competition.

Following the cancellation, a one-game final has been rescheduled to take place in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. This change marks a return to the previous format used in the league from 2019 to 2025. Brampton had initially taken a 6-0 lead in the halted game before the unexpected stoppage occurred.

Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the cancellation of the game. The two teams had previously met twice this season, with Brampton winning both encounters.

Notably, the Sea Bears and the Honey Badgers have advanced to the final stage of the championship, with each team showcasing impressive performances throughout the playoffs. The Sea Bears overcame the Vancouver Bandits in the Western Conference final, while the Honey Badgers secured victory over the Niagara River Lions in the conference final after an intense postseason journey.

The final matchup will not only showcase an exciting on-court rivalry but also an intriguing off-court dynamic as the Sea Bears and the Honey Badgers are owned by siblings, David Asper and Leonard Asper, respectively. The upcoming single-game final promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the CEBL season.
