A remarkable feature of the narwhal is its straight and lengthy tusk, which grows up to three meters in length. The tusk, an upper tooth that emerges through the whale’s lip on the left side, stands out as the only mammal tusk that grows without any curves.
An international research team has uncovered the reason behind the tusk’s unique straight growth pattern. The revelation is linked to the presence of opposing spirals within the tusk structure. Study author Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark expressed surprise at the discovery of two opposing spirals, one turning right and the other left, which contribute to the tusk’s straight growth.
The research, recently published in Nature Communications, delves into the molecular structure of narwhal tusks and spirals. Collaborating with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, Birkedal’s team employed advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans to reveal the intricate composition of the tusks.
The study not only unraveled the mystery of the narwhal’s straight tusk but also holds promise in illuminating the underlying principles of human bone structures, as highlighted by Birkedal. Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist at Harvard University, praised the in-depth research on the unique tooth, emphasizing the tusk’s role as a sensory organ based on his previous studies.
