Massive flash floods struck a border area between Nepal and Tibet, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 160 individuals and leaving numerous individuals, including 24 Canadians, missing. The devastating floods occurred along the Bhotekoshi River, causing significant destruction to villages, roads, and hydropower projects in Nepal. Reports indicated 162 casualties in Nepal and at least three fatalities in Tibet, with more than 558 individuals reported missing in Tibet’s Gyirong county. Among the missing, 260 were foreign nationals, according to CCTV reports.
The catastrophe prompted Nepali officials to issue warnings in various districts and urged residents to steer clear of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani riverbanks. Collaborative rescue efforts were sought from neighboring countries, with Nepal seeking assistance from India and China.
Sunil Sharma, from the Nepal Tourism Board, disclosed that 403 people, including 341 foreign nationals, were missing, with 24 Canadians among them. The situation was described as popular with hikers and pilgrims. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep concern over the flash floods and encouraged Canadians to register with the ROCA system for support.
Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the Canadian impact of the floods and highlighted communication challenges due to power outages. The United Nations and various countries, including China and India, mobilized resources to aid in the rescue and relief efforts. The disaster’s aftermath revealed significant damage to buildings and vehicles, emphasizing the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change.
