Must read

Winnipeg resident Jackson Tachinski expressed overwhelming emotions witnessing Canada’s men’s flag football team make history at the IFAF World Flag Football Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany. Tachinski and his team secured the bronze by defeating Mexico 34-26, with an intense ending where Guillaume BĂ©land intercepted a crucial pass to secure the win in overtime. This victory also secured Canada’s spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will debut as an event.

Reflecting on the pivotal interception, Tachinski described the experience as indescribable and surreal, emphasizing the unique feeling of that moment. He remains in awe of the win and anticipates the opportunity to represent Canada at the upcoming Olympics, highlighting the excitement of being part of such a prestigious event.

The women’s team from Canada also clinched their Olympic berth by defeating the U.S. 27-20, completing an undefeated run. Sara Parker was recognized as the tournament’s most valuable player. In response to the teams’ success, Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea expressed immense pride and admiration for their achievements.

Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics, CFL and NFL players are set to participate in flag football. Blue Bombers receiver Nic Demski, contemplating the possibility of joining the Olympic team, acknowledged the honor of competing on a national stage. Team Canada head coach Paul LaPolice, formerly associated with the Bombers, mentioned that decisions regarding additional players from the CFL or NFL will be made in due course.

Flag football’s appeal lies in its accessibility and creativity on the field, according to LaPolice. The game’s dynamic nature, featuring numerous passes, multiple quarterbacks, and strategic laterals, offers a unique and engaging experience. At the grassroots level, Football Manitoba CEO Bill Johnson highlighted the sport’s increasing popularity, attributing it to the athleticism and skill demonstrated by players at the highest levels, further boosted by the recent Olympic qualifications.
