Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, during the weekend to enjoy live performances by their favorite artists at a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence.

Daisy Chain Fields, a charitable music festival organized by the popular singer Olivia Rodrigo, attracted a diverse lineup of musicians, reminiscent of the pioneering Lilith Fair from the 1990s. The festival featured both emerging and established stars, including queer pop artist Chappell Roan, rapper Doechii, and punk-rock icons like Bikini Kill and Garbage.

Before the event kicked off on Saturday, Rodrigo revealed that the festival had raised a remarkable $10 million for its ten non-profit partners, including Planned Parenthood, the National Institute for Reproductive Health, and Black Mamas Matter Alliance. This amount was generously matched by Melinda French Gates, doubling the total funds raised to $20 million.

Rodrigo had initially announced the festival in June, emphasizing that all performers would volunteer their talents, with proceeds directed to organizations supporting women and girls. The event featured special appearances by music legends like Stevie Nicks and Alanis Morissette, who delivered a memorable performance of the hit song “Ironic” with Rodrigo, incorporating inclusive lyrics.

The festival, named “Daisy Chain” to symbolize unity and strength through collaboration, took place amidst ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the United States, following the recent legal changes affecting abortion rights. Amidst these struggles, Rodrigo and other artists at Daisy Chain Fields expressed hope and solidarity in the face of adversity.

The festival was not just about music, as attendees had the opportunity to engage with various art installations, including a LEGO mural and a display tracing the history of the Riot Grrrl movement. Notable activist groups like the Guerrilla Girls contributed thought-provoking messages through interactive installations, fostering discussions on key social issues.

Despite the sweltering heat, attendees described Daisy Chain Fields as an uplifting and inclusive experience, with a focus on philanthropy and community engagement. The festival’s success in raising awareness and funds for vital causes was praised by its non-profit partners, who highlighted the importance of collective action in promoting women’s rights and well-being.
