Four individuals lost their lives in an operation at a Gaza City displacement camp on Tuesday, as per Israel’s defense minister, who stated that the mission aimed to apprehend a high-ranking Hamas figure. The arrested official was identified as the leader of Hamas’s internal security unit by an Israeli security source to Reuters. Following the raid, the area showed signs of destruction with burnt tents, scattered belongings, and remnants of a charred car. Medical personnel reported that three children were among the casualties during the military incursion, which marked the fifth assault on the region in recent times, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries.
Abu Al Abd, a resident of the camp, expressed distress over the incident, emphasizing the innocence of the children affected. Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had warned of targeted actions in response to children flying kites into Israeli territory. Al Abd’s concern centered on the well-being of the children amid the ongoing conflict.
In response to heightened attacks from Hamas, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated on Telegram that the strike was a preemptive measure to neutralize the perceived threat posed by the terrorist organization. The IDF affirmed their commitment to maintaining a presence in the area to ensure the elimination of any potential risks. Defense Minister Katz reiterated this stance during a visit to the Netiv HaAsara community in Israel.
Faiza al-Bahtini, who lost her nephew in the attack, recounted the harrowing experience of the children amidst the chaos. The cycle of violence has taken a toll on her family, leading to displacement and loss.
The raid occurred in a displacement camp where families sought refuge from previous assaults. Despite a ceasefire that has reduced large-scale clashes, Israeli strikes persist, with the military attributing these actions to prevent further attacks by militant groups. Hamas condemned the recent attack as a grave violation of civilian lives and accused Israel of ongoing aggression post-ceasefire. Hamas urged international intervention to curb Israeli transgressions and uphold the peace agreement.
