Liberals Sweep Byelections, Face Future Test

Must read

The Liberals celebrate a triumphant victory after winning all three byelections on Monday. Despite this success, several seats remain vacant, posing a future electoral test. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s party secured over 50% of the vote in each riding in Ontario, B.C., and Quebec.

Carney expressed gratitude for Canadians’ support, attributing it to unity in endorsing the government’s agenda. Analyst Lori Turnbull noted the expected wins in North Vancouver-Capilano and Beaches-East York, labeling Daniel Gobeil’s victory in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord as a vote of confidence in Carney’s handling of the trade dispute with the U.S.

With three recent resignations and more anticipated, there are currently five official vacancies, set to rise to six with Ontario Conservative Larry Brock’s imminent departure. Notable resignations include Conservative Cathay Wagantall, former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault, and former NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice, who resigned to run provincially.

Political analyst Éric Grenier predicts the Liberals are likely to retain existing seats and potentially gain more based on current polling data. The upcoming byelections will be crucial for the Liberals to strengthen their majority.

Turnbull anticipates the Liberal push for Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, emphasizing the potential impact of the trade war issue. Carney strategically excluded Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton from this round of byelections, a longstanding Bloc stronghold.

The Liberals’ financial advantage in the byelections was highlighted, with strategic grouping by Carney benefiting the party. The Bloc faces challenges in defending their seats post-election results, particularly in Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton.

Of the upcoming six byelections, three will occur in Quebec, two in Ontario, and one in Saskatchewan. Carney is expected to leverage timing advantages to outmaneuver the Conservatives in key ridings. The deadline for calling the next byelection is Dec. 19, following Savard-Tremblay’s resignation in June.
