“PM Carney Slams U.S. Officials’ Disparaging Comments”

Must read

Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to recent disparaging comments made by U.S. cabinet members about Canada and its military, calling the remarks “unbecoming” and urging a more serious approach to trade negotiations. Carney’s comments came following U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent likening Canada’s navy to a defunct attraction at the West Edmonton Mall and U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy’s statement that Canada lacks a military.

Carney stated that such behavior is below the dignity of their positions and emphasized the need for the U.S. to shift from provocative language to a more constructive dialogue for trade discussions to progress. He underlined the importance of respectful engagement between the two nations.

Trade talks between Canada and the U.S. broke down on August 21, leading to a series of social media attacks and derogatory remarks from President Donald Trump and his administration towards Canada. Carney expressed disappointment over the lack of seriousness in the negotiations and highlighted the unfair demands imposed by the U.S. that hindered Canada’s ability to pursue independent trade agreements and support key industries.

The prime minister reiterated that any unreasonable demands would not be entertained, emphasizing the need for a trade deal that respects Canada’s sovereignty and cultural identity. Following the collapse of negotiations, the U.S. imposed significant tariffs on Canadian exports, prompting Canada to reciprocate in kind.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is set to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent to discuss the trade situation further. Champagne emphasized the importance of maintaining a firm stance to protect Canada’s vital sectors and industries during the negotiations. The meeting aims to explore avenues for resolving the trade dispute and rebuilding trust between the two countries.

In a recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos, a majority of Americans expressed opposition to Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods and the proposal to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The survey revealed that most Americans are against these measures, indicating a significant divergence in public opinion on trade policies.

The ongoing discussions between Canadian and U.S. officials underscore the challenges and complexities in resolving the trade dispute while maintaining diplomatic relations and economic stability between the two neighboring countries.
