NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as reported by the Ontario Hockey League. Mayich, aged 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
According to his player profile, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The OHL mentioned that he was admitted to the hospital on August 20 in Arizona while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
St. Louis Blues have expressed their support for Mayich’s recovery, stating that the entire organization is keeping him in their thoughts and prayers as he undergoes medical treatment in Arizona. Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, conveyed their deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging period.
In a news release, OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, extending thoughts to Matthew, his parents, John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family. The University of Arizona State, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student collapsed during an outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. They are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Messages of congratulations were shared by the Hamilton Steel Hockey Club (formerly the Huskies) in 2021 when Mayich signed with the ’67s and in 2023 when he was selected by the Blues. The Huskies noted his long-standing involvement with the organization since he was nine years old.
