“Bail Hearing Delayed Again for Halifax Bomb Threat Suspect”

Must read

A man facing charges related to a bomb threat against the U.S. Consulate in Halifax had his bail hearing postponed for the third time on Friday, as his lawyer sought more information from the prosecution. Ali Assakereh, a Halifax resident, was arrested and charged with uttering threats and public mischief after authorities alleged he placed a propane tank and flammable materials in his car near the consulate.

The man’s legal counsel, Lonny Queripel, expressed challenges in preparing a bail plan due to an ongoing police investigation, leading to uncertainties about potential additional charges. Queripel emphasized the need for clarity on the charges to determine an appropriate bail strategy.

During the court session, the suspect, aged 54, remained in custody on minor charges and consented to this arrangement. Despite the frustration over the case progress, Assakereh appeared cooperative and engaged in discussions with his lawyer through a Farsi interpreter.

The bail hearing was adjourned to August 19 at the provincial courthouse in Halifax. While Assakereh’s family refrained from commenting on the situation, neighbors described interactions with the family during a police search at their residence. The police had previously charged Assakereh with assault, but those charges were later dismissed.

The bomb threat incident led to a brief evacuation of surrounding buildings, including the consulate’s location. Following the suspect’s arrest, experts confirmed that the materials found in his vehicle posed no danger, leading to the lifting of evacuation orders.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains observant, with support extended to the suspect’s family during these challenging circumstances.
