Celine Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by sharing more insights into her battle with illness and the treatments she has been undergoing. The renowned Canadian artist recently opened up in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, revealing that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022.
The debilitating pain, which intensified in 2020, often left Dion struggling to walk and at times necessitated a high dosage of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a rare neurological autoimmune disorder that typically progresses over time, affecting only a small fraction of the population. Its symptoms include muscle stiffness and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no definitive cause for the condition and no approved treatment specific to it, various therapies can help manage the symptoms.
Before receiving her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering from her fans. This sense of dishonesty weighed heavily on her, as she felt a responsibility to her supporters who had enabled her career through their unwavering loyalty.
Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining shows but is now preparing for a comeback, scheduled to return to the stage in September. Her recovery regimen involves a comprehensive approach, including medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been dedicating significant time to 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week in anticipation of her upcoming performances.
Described as constantly in motion and hesitant to remain still for fear of seizing up again, Dion views her recovery and the opportunity to perform once more as a miraculous second chance that she deeply appreciates. She expressed gratitude for the support of her fans and acknowledged the privilege of being able to pursue her passion despite the challenges she has faced.
Looking ahead to her Paris residency, which will feature 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 the following year, Dion conveys a sense of strength, excitement, and slight nervousness, signaling her readiness to return to the spotlight.
