Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Barbora Krejcikova from Czechia have progressed to the next round of the Cincinnati Open. They secured a victory against the fourth-seeded duo of Cristina Bucsa from Spain and Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 of the women’s doubles competition on Monday. The match lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the debut of Dabrowski and Krejcikova as a doubles team. They are set to compete against the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16 scheduled for Tuesday.
In a separate match, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Que., and her partner Sara Errani from Italy secured a victory against Tamara Korpatsch from Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith after a one-hour, 29-minute battle, with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Monday evening.
Fernandez and Errani dominated the first set in just 31 minutes, but faced a tough challenge as Korpatsch and Webley-Smith rallied in the second set, even holding a 6-5 lead and serving for the win before eventually faltering.
The Canadian-Italian duo recorded two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and only nine unforced errors out of the total 34 in the match. They are now set to play against Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia in the Round of 16.
Fernandez had previously been defeated by Xiyu Wang from China in the women’s singles event’s second round on Sunday.
