An innovative glass structure has been developed to provide shelter for mountaineers facing high-altitude challenges. This unique camp, designed by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati in collaboration with Salone del Mobile.Milano, will be featured at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan before being transported by helicopter to its permanent location in the Alps.
The visually striking bivouac was inspired by the natural surroundings of the Alpine landscape, with its design process starting from a detailed 3D scan of the local rock formations. Carlo Ratti, co-founder of CRA, emphasized the importance of blending the structure seamlessly into the environment, contrasting it with the intrusive appearance of traditional bivouacs.
The project aims to minimize visual impact while maximizing functionality, incorporating energy generation, storage capabilities, and water harvesting through air condensation. Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano, praised the design as a harmonious integration of research and nature, reflecting the principles of circular and responsible design.
Carlo Ratti highlighted the architectural philosophy behind the bivouac, drawing inspiration from renowned Italian architect Gio Ponti who likened architecture to a crystal. By leveraging digital fabrication techniques, the team aimed to create a structure that seamlessly integrates with the natural rock formations that define the Alps.
