“Energy suppliers required to fix faulty smart meters in 90 days”

Must read

Energy suppliers are mandated to rectify faulty smart meters within 90 days under new regulations that will soon take effect. Smart meters in many households have been malfunctioning, leading to issues such as failure to send automatic readings to suppliers.

Failure by energy firms to address non-functioning smart meters within the stipulated 90-day period may result in penalties or legal consequences from regulatory body Ofgem. These rules are set to be enforced starting early May, following recent changes that now entitle households to £40 compensation for any smart meter installation problems.

Compensation will also be applicable if an installation appointment fails due to supplier-controlled issues or if a reported problem is not addressed within five working days. Smart meters are widely used in nearly 40 million British households and small businesses.

By 2033, energy providers must replace all smart meters still reliant on 2G and 3G networks before they are phased out. Minister for Energy Consumers, Martin McCluskey, emphasized the importance of timely smart meter repairs to improve standards, protect consumers, and enhance the benefits of smart meters for users.

Victoria Bacon, Director of Communications at Smart Energy GB, highlighted the progress made in enhancing the smart meter experience, with a high percentage now operating effectively and positive feedback from users. The new regulations aim to reassure households, boost smart meter installations, and empower consumers with better control over energy usage and cost-saving tariff options.
