The Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of not neglecting Gaza as a region caught in the balance between peace and conflict. Yvette Cooper called for Israel and Hamas to uphold the current ceasefire, which faces challenges following recent clashes that resulted in over 100 casualties in Gaza due to Israeli air strikes. The Israeli government accused Hamas of attacking its soldiers, escalating tensions over the return of deceased Israeli hostages.
During her inaugural visit to the Middle East as Foreign Secretary, Ms. Cooper pressed Israel to permit more aid into the war-torn Gaza Strip. She stressed the urgency for global leaders to advance the peace plan brokered by Donald Trump earlier this month, in collaboration with countries like Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.
Addressing the Manama Dialogue security summit in Bahrain, she emphasized the need for continued efforts to prevent Gaza from becoming a zone of uncertainty between peace and conflict. Ms. Cooper urged for the removal of aid restrictions, including facilitating the entry of essential assistance through border crossings into Gaza.
Highlighting the critical situation in Gaza, she underscored the necessity for increased humanitarian aid and the lifting of restrictions to ensure access to vital resources such as medical care, shelter, and food for the vulnerable population. The UK pledged £4 million to clear landmines in Gaza to facilitate the delivery of aid to those in need.
Ms. Cooper officially invited Palestine to establish diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom, following the UK’s recognition of a Palestinian state last month. However, she acknowledged the challenges ahead in the peace process, including disarming Hamas, establishing a new government, and ensuring long-term security for all parties involved.
Emphasizing the fragile nature of the ceasefire, she stressed the importance of working towards lasting peace to secure the safety and well-being of individuals in Israel and Palestine. Ms. Cooper also called for unrestricted access for foreign journalists into Gaza to witness and report on the extensive devastation and support the reconstruction efforts led by Palestinians for a better future in Gaza.
Lastly, she highlighted the long-lasting impact of conflicts on children and emphasized the UK’s commitment to protecting and assisting the most vulnerable victims of such crises.
