Must read

A talented young jockey, Bryson Butterfly, hailing from a Native American background and raised on a reservation in Washington State, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the tragic death of a high school student. Butterfly, who was gaining recognition for his skills in horse racing at various tracks in Maryland, West Virginia, and Philadelphia, found himself entangled in a criminal case in 2023.

The incident revolved around the murder of 17-year-old Elias Cieslak, who was fatally shot in Baltimore County. Butterfly, along with two accomplices, was arrested in connection with the crime. In 2024, Butterfly pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery. As part of his plea deal, he agreed to testify against the other two defendants in the case.

According to reports, Butterfly confessed that he had arranged to purchase marijuana from the victim, knowing that his associates, Marcus Powell and David Lofton, intended to rob him. Tragically, Cieslak lost his life after being shot by Powell during the attempted robbery.

Powell admitted guilt and received a life sentence with 40 years suspended, while Lofton’s trial concluded with a similar life sentence, with 50 years suspended. Butterfly, donning an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, expressed remorse in court, stating that he felt coerced by Powell, who had arrived armed at his residence.

In an emotional address to the court, Butterfly tearfully apologized to the victim’s family, acknowledging his profound regret. Despite acknowledging Butterfly’s remorse, Judge Stacy Mayer handed down the requested custodial sentence by the prosecutors.

Judge Mayer highlighted the tragedy of seeing someone with immense potential squander it in such a manner. She emphasized the importance of holding Butterfly accountable for his role in Cieslak’s death, underscoring that such actions could not be overlooked.
