Labour MP Calvin Bailey, a former Royal Air Force member with over 24 years of service, has criticized Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin and Tory MP Robert Jenrick for what he deems as “racist” remarks. Bailey, representing Leyton and Wanstead, emphasized the importance of embracing diversity in shaping our society.
Jenrick faced backlash for comments earlier this year, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the level of integration in Birmingham and the lack of diversity he observed. Pochin also drew criticism for her discontent with advertisements featuring Black and Asian individuals.
Bailey highlighted the significance of Remembrance Sunday, honoring veterans for upholding values like dignity and unity. He emphasized the need to reflect on the type of society we aim to build today and challenged divisive rhetoric, particularly in light of recent controversial statements by fellow MPs.
Bailey condemned the remarks made by Pochin and Jenrick, labeling them as racist and exclusionary. He stressed that modern British identity thrives on diversity, citing the contributions of individuals from various backgrounds to the nation’s history.
The MP underscored his commitment to representing and serving his diverse community, rejecting any notion of exclusion based on race. He called for unity and respect for all individuals, echoing the sentiments of inclusivity embodied by those who have served the country.
Bailey urged for a renewed focus on unity, rejecting divisive narratives, and championing progress over regression. He emphasized the need to honor the sacrifices of the past by fostering a just and inclusive society for future generations, in line with the values upheld by veterans.
