An Illinois woman accused of murdering her two-year-old son was reportedly engrossed in the high-profile trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy, exchanging text messages with friends about the case shortly before her son’s tragic death. Corie Walsh, 40, faces three charges of first-degree murder following the discovery of her son, Barrett, lifeless in their suburban Chicago home’s basement on September 1, as per court documents disclosed by NBC Chicago.
According to prosecutors, Walsh displayed a keen interest in Clancy’s widely followed trial and was actively conversing about it with acquaintances until around 12:30 p.m. on that fateful day, mere hours before Barrett’s distressing demise. Walsh was located elsewhere in the residence with self-inflicted injuries, with authorities revealing that she confessed to ending her son’s life because she believed he embodied the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” Her attorney, Andrea Lyon, characterized Walsh’s actions as a result of a psychotic episode, labeling the incident a tragedy for the entire family.
Upon a neighbor’s distressing discovery of Barrett in the basement, law enforcement officers were summoned to Walsh’s Frankfort residence, situated approximately 56 kilometers southwest of Chicago, shortly before 4 p.m. Prosecutors sought to retain Walsh in custody pre-trial, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The neighbor initiated CPR and alerted emergency services upon finding the child, who was subsequently pronounced deceased at a hospital. Post-mortem examinations revealed that Barrett succumbed to asphyxiation stemming from neck compression.
During a house search, authorities uncovered Walsh in a bathtub filled with bloody water, sporting lacerations on her wrists and thighs. She was promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The revelation that Walsh had been monitoring Clancy’s trial came in the aftermath of a Massachusetts court declaring a mistrial in Clancy’s case, following an impasse among jurors. Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, had been facing charges related to the deaths of her three children in 2023, with claims of postpartum psychosis-induced insanity being put forth by her defense team.
While no official link has been established between Clancy’s trial and the tragic incident involving Walsh’s son, authorities in Illinois have not attributed the latter to the former. Frankfort police and Will County prosecutors remained unresponsive to requests for comments as of Monday.
