Russian Drone Targets Ukraine’s SBU HQ in Kyiv

Must read

A drone of Russian origin targeted the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service in Kyiv on Friday, hitting one of the most significant locations in the ongoing conflict as Russia escalated its air assault against Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that the drone specifically aimed at the office of the Security Service’s leader within the building after discussions with SBU acting chief Oleksandr Poklad.

The attack was labeled a major escalation by Ukraine, prompting Zelenskyy to promise a retaliatory response as Russia’s air raids on the Ukrainian capital entered their tenth consecutive day. The assault resulted in thick black smoke billowing from Kyiv’s historical city center, causing injuries to a minimum of 12 individuals, as per the city’s mayor.

Throughout the over four-year-long conflict with Russia, Ukrainian government structures have seldom been targeted in drone and missile attacks. Zelenskyy declared his directive for a proportional and impactful response, mirroring the severity of the strike whenever feasible. He highlighted preparations for active countermeasures against the Russian strikes during a meeting with Poklad, underscoring the determined geographical scope of their response.

The SBU holds a pivotal role in Ukraine’s military operations, executing impactful strikes within Russia to disrupt Moscow’s war machinery and energy infrastructure. The extensive security agency has executed bold operations against Russia, including the 2022 bombing of a Russian-controlled bridge to Crimea and the 2025 drone operation, codenamed Spiderweb, targeting Russian strategic bombers. Additionally, it is implicated in covert missions targeting senior Russian military personnel and officials accused by Ukraine of war crimes, a practice denounced by Russia as terrorism.

The strike on the SBU coincided with the anticipated visits of U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv over the next two days. Diplomatic endeavors to resolve the conflict have stagnated amidst continuous fighting along a front line stretching over 1,200 kilometers, with Ukrainian cities enduring relentless bombardment. Kyiv has escalated its own strikes inside Russia to diminish Moscow’s economic capacity to sustain the conflict.

Recent days have witnessed a shift in Russia’s tactics, with an increase in daytime assaults utilizing fast-flying, jet-powered drones. The onslaught now includes attacks round-the-clock, compounding the fear instigated by nocturnal airstrikes with the added strain of continual daytime disruptions. The blare of air-raid sirens has become a daily occurrence in Kyiv, wearing down residents and prompting some to consider relocating to evade the persistent danger.

Volodymyr Bovsunovskyi described the challenge of completing routine tasks in a city under siege, recounting a shopping trip cut short by an air-raid warning. The harrowing experiences have led many residents to hope for a respite from the attacks, as Ukraine struggles to counter the escalating assaults. Ivan Datsiv, an IT professional, shared his experience of a drone strike damaging his apartment, humorously mentioning repainting plans amidst the chaos. The relentless alerts have rendered shelter visits futile for Datsiv, leaving him contemplating a move to a safer locale away from the constant threat.
