The 19-year-old newcomer to the event finished with a time of 1:53.86, just behind Australia’s Lani Pallister, who set a championship record with 1:53.67. Erika Fairweather from New Zealand secured the third spot with a time of 1:55.05.
After the race, McIntosh expressed her thoughts on her performance, stating that she believes she can achieve a faster time and that she needs to work on her approach to the race. Despite the disappointment of not clinching the top spot, McIntosh remains focused on her goal of winning at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
During the race, Pallister initially led McIntosh by a small margin, but McIntosh managed to take the lead at the halfway mark. However, Pallister reclaimed the lead towards the end of the race, resulting in McIntosh finishing in second place.
McIntosh, primarily a 400-meter freestyler, entered the 200 free final with a time of 1:55.85, aiming to break the world record of 1:52.23 set by Titmus in 2024. She plans to compete in multiple events at the championships, including the 200 individual medley, 400 free, and 400 IM.
In a separate event, Blake Tierney from Saskatoon secured a gold medal in the men’s 100m backstroke, clocking a time of 53.18 seconds. This victory marked Tierney’s first international gold medal, and he expressed satisfaction with his performance post-race.
Taylor Ruck, another Canadian swimmer, also made a significant impact by winning bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly and 100m backstroke events. Ruck set a Canadian record in the 50m butterfly, showcasing her exceptional skills in the pool.
