After an intense series of events at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the first part of the competition is drawing to a close. The Corner Brook Civic Centre witnessed a heightened level of activity as ball hockey competitors from various regions of the province contended for medals on Tuesday.
In the gold medal match, Team Mount Pearl South emerged victorious over Team Avalon with a score of 4-3. Raine Foss, a 13-year-old player from Paradise, clinched the winning goal and expressed his satisfaction at seizing the opportunity. “I passed it back to the defense, saw the lane, came through, and I scored,” Raine recounted. “It’s a fantastic experience to represent MPS. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Raine’s teammate, Reid Swain, shared his excitement about departing Corner Brook with a gold medal. “We’ve been putting in the effort for the past few months, and we didn’t really believe we could pull it off. But we did, and it feels amazing.”
Although Team Avalon’s Ryan Walsh didn’t achieve the medal color he aimed for, he is leaving Corner Brook with fond memories. “It was great, being together with all the boys, staying in school, and all the other activities. It was all enjoyable,” he remarked.
Team Central managed to secure the bronze medal, a feat that 14-year-old Jack Stone of Grand Falls-Windsor is proud to bring back home. “It’s absolutely ecstatic, you know? You enter a tournament unsure of how you’ll perform. To walk away with a medal is a great feeling,” Stone expressed.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games continue to be a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents and sportsmanship, fostering camaraderie and competitive spirit among participants.
