Growing up, I learned the traditional path to success: attend university, secure a job in your field, get married, buy a house, and start a family. This was the narrative passed down from my parents and the high school guidance counselor. As I neared the end of my second year studying biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph in 2016, I was on track to follow this conventional route.
After unsuccessful attempts to land a summer engineering job in Ontario, I unexpectedly found myself working at a horseback trail riding outfit in Banff National Park. This deviation from my planned trajectory led me to explore the majestic Rockies on horseback, fulfilling my childhood dream of riding in the mountains. Guiding guests through the picturesque landscapes and experiencing the beauty of nature firsthand was a transformative experience.
I came to realize that a fulfilling life does not solely revolve around desk jobs and corporate pursuits. It’s about cherishing simple moments, like a peaceful morning before a busy day or the satisfaction of warming up by a fire after a long, rainy day at work. Through seasonal work, I encountered diverse individuals who had chosen unconventional paths to find fulfillment, inspiring me to redefine my own definition of success.
The friendships forged during my time as a trail guide were unlike any other connections I had made previously. Living and working closely with colleagues for extended periods created deep and enduring bonds. Despite the inevitable goodbyes that came with seasonal work, the lasting impact of these relationships remains significant.
While my decision to pursue cowgirl dreams in Cranbrook, B.C., after obtaining my engineering degree initially puzzled my family, they eventually embraced my unconventional career choices. Working in international sales now, I continue to value the lessons learned during my time in seasonal work, which instilled in me the confidence to explore new opportunities and challenges.
Although my current job allows me to travel and explore the world, there are moments when I yearn for the simplicity of life in the mountains with horses. Reflecting on my journey, I have come to appreciate the importance of following one’s dreams and embracing change, even if it deviates from the expected path.
Embracing new experiences, stepping out of your comfort zone, and having fun are the valuable lessons I learned from my time in seasonal work. It has shaped my perspective on success and living a fulfilling life.
