“UK Town Offers Homes for £5K Amid Rising Property Prices”

Must read

In the UK, there is a delightful town that is considered one of the most budget-friendly places to purchase a home. This town has a rich history and boasts exceptional transportation connections. Often described as a peaceful and charming place adorned with lush green areas.

Furthermore, prospective buyers can acquire a two-bedroom house for as low as £5,000, and in some cases, even less. Recently, a freehold property was put up for auction with a starting price as low as £1,000.

This presents a hopeful opportunity for first-time buyers, especially following reports from the Government indicating a 4.9% increase in house prices earlier this year, raising the average property value in the UK to a staggering £269,000.

Contrastingly, in the North East town of Shildon, renowned for its captivating past, the average house price remains modest at £83,236. Terraced freehold properties have consistently been sold for under £30,000 this year.

Despite its advantageous location, affordable housing options, strong railway heritage, and abundant green spaces, Shildon faces a challenge with a crime rate that surpasses England, Wales, and Northern Ireland by 80%, as per recent crime data reported by the Express.

However, local residents suggest that the town has both positive and negative aspects like any other place. Situated 13 miles from Durham city, Shildon appeals to young families seeking entry into the property market, with its proximity to Durham and excellent transport links, including frequent trains to the city.

Shildon’s historical significance as the world’s first railway town is showcased at the Locomotion museum, which documents County Durham’s industrial progress during the 1800s.

Currently, red-bricked terraced properties in Shildon are available at prices significantly below the national average. Zoopla is promoting several property listings ranging from £30,000 to £70,000, including a two-bedroom terraced house on Princes Street starting at just £1,000.

CrimeRate data updated in 2025 identifies Shildon as the third most hazardous small town in Durham and among the top 10 riskiest locations out of 169 towns, villages, and cities in Durham.

Despite the crime statistics, efforts by the Shildon Town Council aim to enhance the town’s appeal as a desirable residential area, supported by property website Zoopla, which portrays Shildon as a tranquil British town with plenty of green spaces.

Zoopla highlights Shildon’s affordability, emphasizing its accessibility in terms of housing prices, making it an attractive option for those looking for better value. Residents of Shildon appreciate the welcoming atmosphere created by local independent businesses offering a variety of shops and services for everyday needs.

Moreover, the town benefits from fast broadband speeds, adding a modern touch to this charming location, ensuring residents enjoy excellent connectivity.
