Athletes are showcasing their talents at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week, supported by a dedicated team of more than 300 volunteers in orange shirts ensuring the smooth running of the event.
Wednesday marked the transition day at the Games, as a new wave of athletes arrived in the city. Sporting activities are set to resume in the evening.
Duane Huxter has been diligently organizing merchandise for the athletes at the Corner Brook Civic Centre for over a week, mainly folding t-shirts. Reflecting on his commitment, he mentioned how what started as a small task turned into a continuous effort, highlighting the dedication of the volunteers.
Volunteers play a crucial role in various aspects of the Games, from coordinating logistics with local authorities to overseeing operations at venues to guarantee a seamless experience for all participants.
Dave Campbell, the games director with SportNL and a member of the Games host committee, emphasized the importance of collaboration in ensuring the event’s success. He praised the strong community connections and volunteer support from places like Corner Brook and Stephenville.
Coordinating the apparel for 10 teams is no small feat, but Huxter recognizes the significance of creating lasting memories for the athletes. While he played a smaller role in events like the opening ceremonies, he finds fulfillment in contributing to the athletes’ positive experience.
