WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Enhance Privacy

Must read

WhatsApp is gearing up to address a major inconvenience for its users, prompting them to take action promptly to stay current. Traditionally, communication on the platform has been reliant on sharing phone numbers, which isn’t always ideal.

After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is finally resolving this issue by introducing unique usernames. This new feature will allow users to share their username instead of their phone number.

According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can feel like a significant step, especially when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or group chat members. The introduction of usernames aims to offer users a more private and secure way to communicate.

The update will also enhance privacy in group conversations. Users participating in community chats or social groups can now engage without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to strangers.

WhatsApp has confirmed that users can now reserve their preferred usernames before the full launch. Given the massive user base, securing usernames early will increase the chances of obtaining the desired username before it’s taken.

To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.

The rollout of this feature will happen gradually in the following months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their respective regions.
