Virgin Media has shared some valuable tips to ensure consistent internet speeds throughout the year. Placing your router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal obstructions like fish tanks can enhance performance. However, an often overlooked factor affecting performance is the impact of weather changes.
As temperatures climb in late spring and summer, routers can face increased strain, necessitating placement in cool, well-ventilated areas.
Virgin Media highlighted the influence of warmer weather on broadband speeds, stating, “High temperatures during hot weather can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors.
“While external components are designed for heat resistance, internal routers may struggle if exposed to excessive warmth.
“Routers require adequate airflow for optimal performance. If your router is concealed behind furniture, placed in a confined space, near a heat source, or in direct sunlight, heat accumulation, especially during a heatwave, can lead to slower speeds, disconnections, or automatic restarts for cooling.”
Therefore, during warm periods, it is crucial to place your router in a cooler location. While hot weather can impact performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt internet activities like streaming.
Virgin Media emphasized, “Many broadband issues presumed to be weather-related actually originate within the household.
“Factors such as thick walls, excessive device connections, and poor router placement often have a more significant daily impact on connectivity than external weather conditions.”
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, position your router in a central, open area away from direct sunlight. Additionally, avoid placing the router behind large metal objects or furniture.
After severe weather, ensure that your cables are secure and undamaged, as advised by the company.
Lastly, reduce interference by limiting simultaneous device connections for improved performance.
