A long-standing hotel and dining establishment abruptly closed its doors after nearly five decades, leaving its loyal patrons in shock. Guys Thatched Hamlet, situated near Bilsborrow in Lancashire, has officially ceased operations, signaling the end of an era. The sprawling 65-room hotel, nestled by the canal on St Michael’s Road, has ceased its services, resulting in the dismissal of all employees.
A closure notice has been affixed to the hotel’s entrance, formally announcing the shutdown of the premises. The vast property spanning nearly 14 acres boasted various amenities, including a pub, eatery, sports facilities, event spaces, a cricket field, bowling greens, and multiple parking lots.
According to the Lancashire Post, a statement on the notice reads: “After 46 years of operation, Guy’s Thatched Hamlet has now closed. This decision was challenging but well-considered. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our patrons, staff, and suppliers for their enduring loyalty and support over the years.
“The hamlet held significant sentimental value for many individuals, and as it transitions to a new phase, our priority is to bring this chapter to a dignified close.”
Heartbroken customers took to social media to express their sorrow over the closure. One reminisced about a proposal at the venue in 2012, while another lamented a similar engagement in 2015. Another patron shared memories of frequent visits to Guys, including a memorable proposal in the restaurant that garnered applause from fellow diners.
The Wilkinson family had managed the business since 1980 and put it up for sale the previous year, with reported annual turnover around £4.2 million. The property, strategically located with easy access to popular tourist destinations, featured 65 well-appointed guest rooms catering to both leisure and corporate clientele.
Recognized as a standout destination in the North West of England, Guy’s Thatched Hamlet had a strong year-round customer base, with peak business during summer and holiday seasons. The property had undergone extensive renovations and expansions over the years, making it a prominent landmark in the region.
