“Estonia Demands Answers After Putin Military Boat Display”

Must read

Vladimir Putin’s military has issued a peculiar new challenge to NATO by navigating a boat displaying the emblem of the notorious Wagner private army near the EU border. Video footage captured the presence of the border force vessel, associated with Moscow’s secretive FSB security service, on the Narva River, close to the NATO territory border. Estonia, apprehensive of potential Russian aggression, is now demanding an official clarification from Russia. Despite the incident, Moscow has refrained from offering any comments.

The Wagner private military company, once filled with numerous mercenaries, played a significant role in Vladimir Putin’s initial incursion into Ukraine. However, a rift emerged between Putin and the group’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was formerly Putin’s chef. In June 2023, Prigozhin led an unsuccessful coup against the Putin administration due to disagreements over placing all personnel under Russian army command. Two months later, Prigozhin perished in a plane crash, widely believed to be orchestrated by the Kremlin.

Currently operating with an estimated 5,000 soldiers, Wagner continues to conduct military activities on behalf of the Kremlin in Africa and potentially still maintains a limited presence in Ukraine. The utilization of the Wagner flag on the Narva River, a tense boundary between Russia and NATO member Estonia, has sparked conjecture that the group might be making a move against Moscow, displaying disloyalty to Putin.

Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, pondered whether the spirit of the late Prigozhin persists in Russia or if the Wagnerites are planning another action against Moscow or even towards St. Petersburg this time. He commented on the apparent cracks in Russia’s ‘iron’ system due to its aggressive warfare and the sustained pressure from Western nations. The Estonian Foreign Ministry expressed vigilance over Russian activities on the Narva River, hinting at the possibility of Russian border guards being absorbed without certainty.

The Russia-Estonia border spans 183 miles, with Operation Cabrit involving approximately 900 British troops stationed in Estonia to bolster NATO’s presence in the region, alongside French and local forces. The primary deployment is at the Tapa military base, situated around 80 miles from the Russian border.
