A man referred to as the “laughing driver” has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a father-of-two Good Samaritan. Hassan Jhangur, 25, fatally struck Chris Marriott with his car as Marriott was assisting a woman injured on the road after a fight erupted at a wedding reception. Jhangur intentionally drove into multiple individuals, including Mr. Marriott, who had stopped to help one of Jhangur’s sisters.
The court heard that Mr. Marriott, a devout Christian, lost his life in the incident, while three others, including off-duty midwife Alison Norris, Jhangur’s mother, and sister, sustained injuries. Jhangur also violently attacked his new brother-in-law by stabbing him multiple times after the vehicular assaults.
Following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court, Jhangur was found guilty of murdering Mr. Marriott and causing grievous bodily harm to several others. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 26 years and banned from driving for 30 years. The victim’s family expressed their devastation over the loss of Mr. Marriott, describing him as a compassionate individual who dedicated his life to helping others.
During the trial, Prosecutor Jason Pitter KC argued that Jhangur intentionally used his car as a weapon to cause serious harm, involving unsuspecting individuals like Mr. Marriott and Ms. Norris in a family conflict that turned violent on the streets of Sheffield. The tension stemmed from a wedding dispute between Amaani Jhangur and Hasan Khan, leading to a series of confrontations that culminated in the tragic events of that day.
Witness testimonies revealed the chaos and violence that unfolded, with Mr. Marriott and Ms. Norris being inadvertently drawn into the escalating conflict while trying to assist those in need. Riasat Khan, who witnessed the events after his son’s wedding, recounted the terrifying moment when Jhangur deliberately targeted him and others with his car before resorting to a knife attack.
Jhangur’s callous behavior, including laughing and brandishing a knife after the incident, highlighted the severity and premeditation of his actions. The court’s decision to convict him of murder and related charges underscored the gravity of his crimes and the impact on the victims and their families.
As the legal proceedings concluded, the community reflected on the tragic loss of Mr. Marriott and the harrowing events that unfolded on that fateful day, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability in the face of such senseless violence.
